Thanksgiving Stuffing

Servings: 6

Ingredients:

  • 1 box Mrs. Cubbison’s Traditional Stuffing

  • 1 tube Jimmy Dean sausage with sage

  • 1 large green apple; grated

  • 1 cup celery; finely chopped

  • 1 cup yellow onion; finely chopped

  • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter

Please note: you are NOT following the instructions on the box. Follow the below:

Preheat oven to 350.

Grease 9x13 casserole dish. Foil pan will work as well.

Cook sausage on medium heat in a large frying pan, crumbling very fine.

In a large sauce pan, cook butter on medium heat, adding celery and onion. Stir and sauté until veggies are translucent.

Pour box of stuffing mix into a large mixing bowl. Gradually stir in veggies with butter and chicken broth. Then add sausage and apple. Mix thoroughly. Add salt & pepper to taste if needed.

Pour stuffing mixture into greased pan evenly. Cover in foil and bake for 40 minutes. With 15 minutes remaining, remove foil for a crispy top.

Notes:

While other boxed stuffing mixes will work, Mrs. Cubbison’s is the undisputed best. Make sure you get the ‘Traditional’ stuffing, and not the cornbread stuffing. This is a very popular brand and always sells out at the grocery store around Thanksgiving and Christmas. We suggest buying your stuffing a couple weeks ahead of time. If you wait until the day before your holiday, you might be out of luck!

Here at GoodCooking, we are stuffing purists, and like to keep it simple, so we don’t throw a ton of ingredients in. You certainly can add ingredients to this stuffing if you choose. Some people enjoy nuts and dried cranberries.
